Mom and child pairs (age 8 years-12 years old) who participated in Healthy Start II are now eligible to complete the ECHO follow-up visit.

ECHO Visits and Procedures

The ECHO visit takes about 3.5-4 hours to complete. We’ll provide lunch and you will be compensated for your time.

PROCEDURES:

  • Bod Pod Measurement

    • Body composition (e.g. fat mass, fat free mass) is measured in this device. Radiation free.

  • Tremoflo

    • 3-5 minute lung function test. Non-invasive, radiation free.

  • Height, Weight, Skinfold measurements, and Waist Measurements

  • Blood Pressure

  • Arterial Stiffness (SphygmoCor) Measurement

    • Determines how quickly blood is traveling through the body using pulse wave velocity testing. Non-invasive.

  • Fasting Blood Draw

    • Screens your child for type 1 diabetes and celiac disease through the free Autoimmunity Scrreening for Kids (ASK) program.

    • Numbing cream available.

  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test

    • In addition to the fasting blood draw, we will ask your child to drink a glass of liquid containing a sugary drink and then we will draw another 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of blood. Numbing cream available.

    • Screens your child for insulin resistance and diabetes.

  • Neurocognitive Assessment on the iPad

  • Optional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scan

    • 2nd in-person visit required. This scan is used to measure fat patterning around the Abdomen and Brain. Radiation free.
